What is CBG?

Intro
Looking Forward by Looking Back
Although the medicinal properties of CBG are just now becoming more mainstream, CBG has been used medicinally for thousands of years. CBG (alongside THC) was first synthesized in 1964 by Yehiel Gaoni and Raphael Mechoulam in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Georgia. In the past 5 years, there has been tremendous popularity in CBG products. This rise in demand is due to its non-intoxicating properties and pharmacological potential. CBG products have a plethora of potential benefits, and the clean and uplifting feeling it provides is heavily desired. Most brands have been pushing CBG products in 5-20mg doses because it’s extremely difficult to find strains that produce CBG in high quantities. Thankfully for you, we’ve mastered this and can produce CBG in high quantities and potencies - like 50mg capsules, and 1,000mg tinctures. We even have some heavy duty 2,000mg tinctures for special occasions. Hold tight, we’re going to dive deeper into these details next!

CBG Packs a Punch
CBG should be considered the holy grail of cannabinoids. The acidic version of CBG (CBGA) is the trigger compound for the top 3 cannabinoid lines; THCA and CBDA. These are the acidic precursors of THC and CBD. As a maturing cannabis plant flowers, it begins releasing various enzymes and compounds that combine to create CBGA. As the plant nears the end of its growth cycle and absorbs maximum UV light, CBGA breaks down and converts into THCA and CBDA. Furthermore, CBGA is decarboxylated (activated) by heat energy to create THC and/or CBD. Certain strains and genetics can also be bred to produce high quantities of CBG, which is also released through the same CBGA reaction.
With the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp plants that contain less than 0.3% THC are federally legal. CBGA exists in both cannabis and hemp plants, and since it directly correlates to CBG and CBG potency in hemp plants, farmers can produce CBG in hemp plants. Just like cannabis, hemp strains can also produce high-potency CBG yields. Hemp geneticists and farmers have been crossbreeding hemp strains to produce CBG-rich strains. For example, the CBG used in our CBG capsules and tinctures is a ratio of ~39CBG : 1THC. It took almost 2 years of pheno hunting to find this rare CBG strain which allows us to produce substantially higher quantities of CBG in much higher potencies. You simply won’t find another brand that produces the world-class CBG that we produce By now, you're probably saying "So, how does CBG make you feel?".

Now Let’s Talk About CBG Benefits
CBG oil has an array of medical benefits within the human body. Just like its close relative CBD, CBG is considered non-intoxicating. Remember, it's misleading to refer to cannabinoids as “non-psychoactive” but we've already covered that in a previous article. CBG does not create a “high” like THC, but it does provide some quite desirable effects and medicinal qualities. Research shows that CBG can bind and interact with both CB1 and CB2 receptors within the body's internal endocannabinoid system. The human body contains an endocannabinoid system (also referred to as the ECS), which works to regulate and balance the body in a state of homeostasis. This process sends signals to receptors throughout limbs, organs, nerves, as well as reproductive, immune, and digestive systems. Now let's dive into some of the reported pharmacological and medicinal benefits of CBG oil.
1. Anti-inflammatory
When it comes to inflammation, CBG follows suit with its other cannabinoid companions. Perhaps one of the best examples of the anti-inflammatory properties of CBG is the effect it has on individuals who experience inflammatory bowel disease, also known as IBS. IBS is the result of chronic inflammation of the digestive tract. A 2013 preclinical study on mice found that CBG reduced bowel inflammation, nitric oxide production (which is produced with high levels in certain types of inflammation), and oxidative stress in intestinal cells. Additionally, other research on mice has shown that diseases that are characterized by inflammatory or autoimmune components, CBG may help to address inflammation and suppress immune responses.
2. Appetite Enhancer
We've all heard about the munchies from our good ole pal THC, but believe it or not, CBG may also has a munchie-inducing effect on appetite. With chronic diseases like AIDS or Cancers, patients often experience drastic changes to their appetite, some even developing anorexia or cachexia (deterioration of the body). A study published in “Behavioral Pharmacology” in 2017 took a look at the effects purified CBG oil had on rats. The study found an uptick in the number of meals the rats consumed, as well as a larger meal size.
3. Antiseptic and Antibacterial
CBG holds tremendous antibacterial and antiseptic qualities that have shown promising results fighting difficult to treat infections. MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) is a superbug that has the ability to cause gnarly infections which are challenging to treat in humans. CBG has shown surprising results when used as an aide to treat MRSA. In addition to the CBG effects, CBD, CBC, THC, and CBN have also proven to possess significant antibacterial and antiseptic properties. It will be really interesting to see the evolution of CBG oil used as possible treatments for these ailments.
4. Fights Tumors
A 2014 study published in “Carcinogenesis” examined the effects of CBG in a mouse containing colon cancer. The researchers discovered that CBG oil was responsible for promoting cancer cell death and hindering the growth of tumors, which helps halt the steady progression of colon cancer. Only time will tell how these results will scale and be reproduced in cancer treatments for humans, but the early research in animals is promising.
5. Glaucoma
When it comes to your sight, nothing can be taken lightly. Glaucoma is one of the worldwide leading causes of blindness and affects millions of people. CBG has been shown to ease intraocular pressure, which is what causes the majority of damage from Glaucoma. Both CBG and THC have showed promising effects when it comes to relieving pressure in the eyes, but unlike THC, CBG did not interrupt certain phases in a person's sleep cycle. Count us in!
6. Energy and Focus
Increased productivity? Wouldn't your boss love that. But forget your boss, who doesn't love a little boost of energy, especially when it comes from a hemp plant - with no crash or jitters. CBG could be your new secret weapon for productivity. By using CBG products, some users have even reported cutting coffee consumption. Heading out for a hike? Show at Red Rocks? Day boarding on the mountain? Pop some CBG beforehand and you will be sure to jumpstart the day.
